We are very proud to be one of them.
What does this status mean for your child’s education? Recognition by the DfE of the improvements in teaching and learning made by Sinfin Community School. It enables us to continue to raise standards, with particular focus on Science, Maths, Design Technology, ICT and, of course, Engineering. However, achievement in these departments is underpinned by very strong English, Modern Foreign Languages, PE, Humanities and Performing Arts departments. It brings additional resources to the school. Additional funding enables all departments to benefit and has also enabled us to provide a broad range of vocational qualifications such as Hospitality and Catering; Motor Vehicle Maintenance: Hair & Beauty and Land Based Studies.
Derby is an Engineering city. Our school is a near neighbour of Rolls-Royce, with whom we have many existing links. We also have well developed links with other employers, trainers and providers. A significant number of our students experience opportunities through project work, which is initiated by local industry and training. These are in addition to work experience and will either complement their course of study or provide a broader knowledge and understanding.
Engineering specialist status allows us to provide a greater range of vocational qualifications to better prepare students for the world of work. An Engineering city needs Engineers and a work force to support them; so our specialism makes our students more employable. It will prepare them to follow even better pathways from school to training and Further Education, so that they then have the best possible opportunities when they join the world of work.
