Sinfin Community School was opened in 1974 as an 11 to 16 community school to serve the growing population of the Sinfin area of Derby. It is situated on the outskirts of Derby City with easy access to the rail and motorway networks, the beautiful surrounding countryside and the Peak District National Park.
Our traditional catchment area has increased since 1993 and we serve areas of the city centre as well as local residential areas and some nearby villages. Approximately 900 students are on roll but the school has a capacity for 1050 students. We serve a culturally diverse population with representations from a wide variety of countries and communities and we are proud of our welcoming and accepting ethos.
In March 2006 the school suffered from a major fire which destroyed over 50% of the building. The school was able to access Building Schools for the Future funding to build a brand new £21million school on the existing site and, after a number of years of turmoil working alongside a building site and with students learning in 35 temporary classrooms, pupils finally moved into their new building in September 2008.
In September 2006 Sinfin Community School became one of a small number of specialist engineering schools in the country. This specialism has brought many positives to the school and the engineering philosophy of creative thinking and problem solving underpins many aspects of school life. The school has led the way for the introduction of the new diploma qualifications in conjunction with Derby College.
The school’s vision statement is “Learning brings success” based on the principle that education should be rewarding in the short-term as well as bring long-term benefits to career prospects, financial security, health and emotional well-being.
The school further details the definition to include the following characteristics:
Success comes when:
• Students and staff enjoy coming to school every day.
• Students participate in exciting and challenging lessons.
• Every student is enabled to recognise and achieve their full potential.
• Staff and students respect each other, co-operate and can share a joke.
• There are good levels of support, facilities and resources to meet our needs.
